Bore 12 Battle Scars: Charles Henry "Charlie" Dear, 43rd Battalion Virginia Cavalry - Mosby's Rangers. This is just one of many different accounts of accomplished individuals who served with the famed "Gray Ghost."
Charles Henry “Charlie” Dear rode into legend as one of the daring young troopers of the 43rd Battalion Virginia Cavalry—Mosby’s Rangers—whose lightning strikes behind Union lines made them the terror of northern Virginia. Dear joined Mosby at 16 from VMI, he was wounded 12 times and took part in many of the swift night raids, surprise ambushes, and audacious captures that defined partisan warfare. The 43rd Battalion was no ordinary cavalry unit; its men scattered to their homes by day and assembled at a moment’s notice to strike Federal outposts, wagon trains, and patrols, often vanishing before superior forces could react. In this hard, irregular war of stealth and speed, Dear earned a reputation for courage and endurance, sharing in the Rangers’ celebrated exploits that netted prisoners, horses, and supplies while tying down thousands of Union troops. Through grit, horsemanship, and loyalty to Mosby’s command, Charlie Dear became part of the enduring story of the Confederacy’s most famous partisan band.
Within this 39 page book are a compilation of Dear's written experiences, newspaper headlines, photographs, and anything that could be found on the man.
