Legend tells of a candy maker who desired to make a candy to glorify his Savior Jesus Christ at Christmas; by telling the story of His birth, death, resurrection and ministry with candy. In beginning it needed to be pure white to symbolize his virgin birth and pure sinless nature. It also required red stripes as by His stripes we are healed. It then needed a larger red stripe to signify His shed blood for our salvation; and it needed to be a hard candy as He is the solid rock upon which His church is built as His word and promises are their firm foundation. It also needed a shape that would easily identify, so the letter "j" was used from the precious precious name of Jesus, who came to earth as our Savior, and when inverted becomes the staff of the good shepherd. The uprightness of the letter and staff also symbolize His resurrection from the grave. It also needed a flavor that was clean, refreshing, and sweet; all elements of Christian salvation. It soon became clear the nature of the candy he must produce; the Christmas Candy Cane resulted. In 1919 in Albany, Georgia, Bob McCormack began making candy canes. By the middle of the 20th Century his company became one of the world's leading makers of candy canes.
