August 6, 1814 – October 13, 1894 EDUCATOR – Professor of Humanities – William and Mary College RECTOR – St. Paul’s Episcopal Church – Richmond, Virginia – Known as “The Cathedral of the Confederacy” PRESIDENT – Richmond Soup Association – Providing wholesome food for the poor Back: As a native of Germany, Charles Frederick Ernest Minnigerode immigrated to America in 1839. In 1842 he was professor of Greek and Latin at William and Mary. He accepted the pastorate of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in 1856 and remained for 33 years. It was said, “his preaching is most acceptable; his views of Scripture clear and evangelical. How thankful we be to have such a man over us.” Minnigerode preached to hundreds of Confederate soldiers in the church and in the field. He ministered to Confederate civil and military officials. He baptized President Jeff Davis on May 6, 1862 and later visited him in prison. He formed an orphanage for children and provided artificial limbs to soldiers.
