In defense of Virginia, ten companies of volunteers from Northern Virginia filled the ranks of the 17th. Company K was present in the 1st skirmish of the war June 1, 1861 at Fairfax Court House and also marked the death of the first Confederate Officer killed, Captain John Quincy Marr of the Warrenton From Fairfax C.H. to Appomattox, the 17th fought invasion valiantly in defense of their native State. In the end, of the 750 Northern Virginians who served, only 48 were left. Of that number, 22 served from the beginning. At Appomattox, Col. Arthur Herbert surrendered two officers and 46 enlisted men.
